Police say one driver was hospitalized after a school bus carrying almost 20 children caused a crash with a car that partially shut down Route 120 in Lakemoor.
The Lakemoor Police Department and Wauconda Fire District responded around 2:12 p.m. July 31 to the area of Route 120 and Volo Village Road in Lakemoor for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Officers arrived and found a two-vehicle crash at the west intersection west of the Woodman’s Food Market.
Lakemoor Police Chief David Anderson said the crash involved a school bus and a Nissan Maxima.
Fire crews reported the car collided with the driver’s side of the bus and there was moderate damage.
Anderson said the school bus, driven by a 79-year-old Prospect Heights resident, was on Volo Village Road attempting to make a left turn onto eastbound Route 120.
The Nissan, driven by a 48-year-old Crystal Lake man, was traveling westbound on Route 120 approaching Volo Village Road.
The school bus pulled out in front of the Nissan and struck the left rear of the bus, Anderson said.
The driver of the Nissan was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life-threatening injuries.
Anderson said there were four counselors and 17 children on the bus, in addition to the driver. No one on the bus was injured.
The bus, which belongs to First Student out of Prairie View, was being chartered by LifeTime Fitness out of Lake Zurich.
The driver of the Nissan was the sole occupant of his car. The school bus driver was issued a citation for failing to yield while turning left, Anderson said.
One lane of eastbound Route 120 and one lane of westbound Route 120 were shut down for at least 30 minutes.
Tow trucks arrived and then all traffic on westbound Route 120 was shut down for 15-20 minutes so the vehicles could be removed.
Anderson said no impairment was suspected in the crash.
