Two people were hospitalized after a crash involving a dump truck and a tow truck caused major damage and left the dump truck, along with a car, both rolled over near Grayslake.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Wauconda Fire District responded around 3:50 p.m. Thursday to the area of Fairfield Road and Chardon Road in unincorporated Grayslake for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found two commercial vehicles involved with major damage, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Chief Christopher Covelli.
A preliminary investigation showed a Peterbilt flatbed tow truck was towing a Hyundai SUV.
The Peterbilt, driven by a 47-year-old man from Merrillville, Indiana, was stopped on westbound Chardon Road while attempting to turn left onto southbound Fairfield Road, Covelli said.
Traffic on Chardon Road is controlled by a stop sign at the intersection.
Covelli said the driver began his left turn but pulled out in front of a northbound Mack tractor, driven by a 49-year-old Lake Bluff man.
The Mack was carrying a loaded water tank and also towing a trailer with a skid steer.
The driver of the Mack was unable to stop and struck the driver’s side of the Peterbilt, Covelli said.
The impact caused the water truck to roll over and the Hyundai to be thrown from the tow truck onto its side.
Both drivers were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Wauconda Fire District Battalion Chief Adam Schlick said both vehicles were occupied only by their drivers, who suffered minor to moderate injuries.
There was no entrapment but the driver of the Peterbilt was still inside the cab of the truck and was assisted out.
The Mack was carrying approximately 1,000 gallons of water and belonged to a local paving company, Schlick said.
The driver of the Peterbilt was cited for failing to yield while making a left turn and failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
Mike’s Towing responded to the scene with a heavy wrecker to remove the damaged vehicles, Schlick said. The intersection was closed for approximately an hour.
