Bystanders intervened and police responded after a child yelled that the man she was with at Target in Algonquin was not her father, causing concern that she was being kidnapped Friday evening.
The incident happened early Friday evening at Target, 750 South Randall Road in Algonquin.
The Algonquin Police Department said they responded to the parking lot of the store for a possible child abduction.
Multiple witnesses called 911 about a child yelling that the man she was with was not her father.
“Officers responded with urgency, quickly located the vehicle, and investigated the situation,” the department said.
It was determined that the man was the child’s father. Both were safe and no crime occurred.
“We appreciate the witnesses who called 911. When it comes to the safety of a child, we will always respond quickly and take every report seriously,” the police department said.
A woman who was at Target when it happened said the incident escalated quickly outside with people trying to block the man from leaving.
Another woman who was inside the store said she heard a child yelling throughout the store. “It was so loud you could hear them all away on the other side of the store.”
“The child did something that they were not supposed to be doing. The dad had enough and proceeded to carry the child outside. The child didn’t like it so they proceeded to start yelling,” she said.
