A Cary woman is in custody after she allegedly drove intoxicated and fled the scene of a crash she caused that left a motorcyclist seriously injured and bleeding profusely on Route 31 in Algonquin Sunday evening.
The Algonquin Police Department and Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District responded around 6 p.m. Sunday to the area of Route 31 near South Main Street for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Fire crews arrived and reported finding a motorcycle crash with the rider down in the roadway.
He was reported to be conscious at the scene. The crash occurred on the Route 31 bypass between Algonquin Road and South Main Street.
The other vehicle involved was reported to be driven by Lauren L. Potter, 38, of Cary, according to court records.
A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court said Potter rear-ended the motorcycle, at which time her vehicle pushed the motorcycle as it laid on the pavement with the rider.
The complaint said Potter recklessly left the scene of the crash, which left the motorcyclist injured.
The victim suffered a head injury and severe road rash to the left side of his body that was “profusely bleeding.”
A large amount of blood was on the pavement from the victim as he was being transported to the hospital. His condition was not known.
Potter was later arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving injury, aggravated reckless driving causing bodily harm and aggravated driving under the influence causing a crash involving bodily harm.
The complaint said Potter was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash, which resulted in great bodily harm to the victim.
She was transported to the McHenry County Jail where she remains held pending an Initial Appearance Court hearing on Monday afternoon.
The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office has filed a petition to detain her pending trial.
