A driver was transported to the hospital after a semi-tanker truck hauling a non-hazardous chemical rolled over, blocking most lanes on Interstate 94 near Gurnee, fire officials said.

The Gurnee Fire Department, Libertyville Fire Department and Illinois State Police responded around 4:41 a.m. Saturday to the area of Interstate 94 at the 11-mile post on the border of Gurnee and Waukegan for a report of a rollover crash with injuries.

Gurnee Fire Department Lt. Tony Roberts said crews received a call for a single-vehicle crash involving a rolled-over tanker truck.

They were notified that the tanker had non-hazardous material on board.

Firefighters arrived and found the driver had already self-extricated from the cab of the truck, Roberts said.

The truck had been traveling westbound on Route 120 on the ramp to eastbound Interstate 94 when the driver lost control and rolled the vehicle over.

Roberts said the tanker contained sodium silicate, also known as liquid glass, which was confirmed to be non-hazardous.

The tank stayed intact and crews found no active leaks. Paramedics transported the driver, a 35-year-old man, to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

He was alert and oriented and did not suffer serious injuries.

Ernie’s Wrecker Service and LinnMar Towing both responded to upright the vehicle and remove it from the scene.

Roberts said the semi-tanker truck blocked four lanes of traffic, with only the left shoulder remaining open.

Crews were able to upright the truck in about an hour and clear the blockage.

It is unclear if the driver was issued any citations and Illinois State Police were investigating the incident.

The incident was the second rollover crash involving a semi-truck in the exact same location in just over two weeks.
