Police said in an update that a man and a woman were both shot in the chest and a third victim was also shot after multiple gunmen fired over 50 shots during a vigil for a homicide victim at Cinnamon Lake Towers in Waukegan.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Craig Neal said a vigil was being held around 8:20 p.m. Wednesday at Cinnamon Lake Towers, 2725 West Glen Flora Avenue in Waukegan.
The balloon release vigil was being held for Koron Gibson, 29, of Waukegan, who died on Monday evening after being shot in the 700 block of Lincoln Avenue in Waukegan.
Family and friends were gathered for the Wednesday evening balloon release when a shooting occurred in the parking lot of the apartment complex.
Neal said officers received calls for shots fired, with callers reporting a large crowd was causing a disturbance before the shooting.
The Waukegan Police Department responded to investigate and set up a perimeter to canvass for evidence, according to Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Garrett Miller.
The Waukegan Fire Department also responded to treat the victims and transport them to the hospital.
Neal said officers arrived and encountered a large, unruly crowd refusing to disperse from the parking lot.
Officers also found three victims who had been shot and required medical assistance.
Residents at Cinnamon Lake Towers said the gunfire sounded like a machine gun.
A female victim suffered gunshot wounds to her chest and leg, Neal said. A male victim was shot in the shoulder and chest.
A second female victim suffered a gunshot wound to her leg.
Ambulances transported two of the victims to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville and the third victim to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.
Investigators recovered over 50 spent shell casings of different calibers, indicating multiple shooters, along with other pieces of crime-related evidence on the ground in the parking lot.
The incident drew a large police response from multiple agencies to the chaotic scene. Crime scene tape was set up in the parking lot.
Miller said that Alex B. Agee, 49, of North Chicago, who is the father of Gibson, was “extremely agitated and aggressive” with police at the scene.
Neal said Agee also shouted threats towards officers. Miller said Agee began tearing up crime scene tape and entering the crime scene.
Officers warned him three times not to do that but continued to do so, Miller said.
Officers tried to arrest Agee and he fought with them, injuring them, Miller said.
Agee was charged with aggravated assault of a peace officer, a Class 4 felony, and two counts of resisting or obstructing a peace officer, a Class A misdemeanor.
Neal said the unruly crowd led to the North Chicago Police Department, Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Gurnee Police Department, Zion Police Department and Mundelein Police Department responding to assist.
The scene was released around 11:30 p.m. The police department thanked the public for helping share information to assist with the investigation, which is being led by the Community Crimes Division.
The suspects fled prior to police arriving and the investigation remains active.
Agee appeared for a First Appearance Court hearing on Thursday morning and was released from custody due to the charges being non-detainable under the Illinois SAFE-T Act.
Lake County Judge Michael Nerheim ordered Agee to be placed on Level 4 pre-trial supervision, not possess any dangerous weapons and have no violent or harassing contact with the Waukegan Police Department or Lake County Courthouse.
Nerheim also ordered Agee to have no contact with gang members, a request that prosecutors sought and Agee’s defense attorney objected to.
Four gunmen opened fire on Gibson in the area of 8th Street and Lincoln Avenue just before 7 p.m. Monday, prosecutors said. He was shot multiple times and died at the hospital.
Daveion L. Gordon-Brown, 17, of Waukegan, was charged Wednesday with two counts of first-degree murder, a Class M felony, in connection with the homicide.
Gordon-Brown was among four arrested following an hour-long police chase in Lake County on Monday evening.
