The coroner has released the identity of a 14-year-old boy who died after he was found suffering from a gunshot wound at a house in Cary Saturday afternoon.
The Cary Police Department and Cary Fire Protection District responded around 1:29 p.m. Saturday to the 300 block of Carl Sands Drive in Cary for an unknown medical emergency.
911 callers reported a person was bleeding and someone was starting CPR, according to fire department radio.
Cary Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said paramedics arrived and were directed to a teenage patient inside the residence who had suffered a “critical traumatic injury.”
Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek identified him on Monday as Ryan Marin, 14, of Cary.
A medical helicopter was initially requested due to the severity of the teen’s condition but it was canceled a short time later.
Marin was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries, Vucha said.
“Due to the circumstances surrounding the incident, any additional information or questions regarding the investigation should be directed to the Cary Police Department,” he said.
Cary Deputy Police Chief Scott Naydenoff said officers arrived on the scene and were met by the occupants of the home who directed them to Marin, who had suffered a “traumatic injury.”
Officers rendered medical aid until care was transferred to members of the Cary Fire Protection District.
Marin was transported to an area hospital where he unfortunately died from his injuries, Naydenoff said.
The incident is being investigated by the Cary Police Department, which is being assisted by the Major Investigations Assistance Team (MIAT).
“We are in the very early stages of the investigation. More information should be available later this week,” Naydenoff said.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office said they responded to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington to take possession of Marin, who was pronounced dead in the emergency room, for an autopsy.
An autopsy was performed Monday morning on Marin, Banek said, adding that it showed he died as a result of a gunshot wound.
Coroner’s officials said the exact circumstances are still being investigated.
Crime scene tape was set up around the home all day on Saturday and police investigators from MIAT were seen at the residence in the evening hours.
