Police were investigating after a student of Highland Park High School reported an individual who posted a photo of a replica gun and made concerning statements on social media.
The City of Highland Park said they were notified Tuesday morning of concerning and recent social media posts from an individual.
A Highland Park High School student saw the posts, which included a firearm and captions that were concerning and potentially threatening.
The student brought the posts to the attention of their parent who notified the police department.
The investigation did not indicate a credible threat and the subject responsible for the posts did not have possession of a firearm, city officials said.
The individual voluntarily surrendered an airsoft gun that was depicted in the posts.
City officials and Township High School District 113 said safety is a top priority.
“The City and TSHD 113 approach any threat with an immediate, collaborative investigation and response to protect student and public safety and ensure that students, parents, teachers, and staff feel safe at school,” city officials said in a statement.
The city said they commend the student for quickly reporting the concerning posts. The identity of the subject who made the posts was not released.
“Everyone plays a part in promoting community safety. If you see something that doesnโt seem right, say something by calling 911.”
