A woman and a police officer were hospitalized after authorities say a man shot his girlfriend and then attacked a responding officer, leaving the officer unconscious, in Zion Tuesday morning.
The Zion Police Department responded around 3:10 a.m. Tuesday to the 1400 block of 19th Street in Zion for a report of a shooting.
Zion Police Department Detective Lt. Paul Kehrli said a 911 caller reported a woman was shot in the home.
The 911 caller provided “very little information” before disconnecting, Kehrli said. Officers arrived and initially received no answer at the door.
A male resident, later identified as 20-year-old Adrian Olivares, opened the door several minutes later.
He reported that his 24-year-old girlfriend had been shot.
Kehrli said officers could see the victim inside the home bleeding from a wound to her upper torso.
Officers attempted to move past Olivares to render aid to the wounded woman and he attempted to block their entry into the home, Kehrli said.
Olivares failed to comply with verbal commands and he attacked the officers, striking one with a blow to the head, Kehrli said.
The officer was left unconscious for approximately a minute, prosecutors said. Other officers subdued Olivares and took him into custody.
Additional officers rendered aid to the wounded woman, who was found to have a single gunshot wound, as well as the injured officer.
Kehrli said the Zion Fire and Rescue Department arrived and paramedics rushed the woman to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
The woman has been stabilized and remains in the hospital.
The injured officer was treated for a concussion at a local hospital and released.
Detectives responded and applied for a search warrant for the home, Kehrli said.
They located three firearms, including two of which were stolen, as well as a single spent casing.
No one in the residence could legally own firearms.
Numerous baggies of cocaine, nearly 13 pounds of cannabis and Xanax packaged for sale were also recovered.
Kehrli said a preliminary investigation shows that Olivares shot his girlfriend but his intent is still unknown.
Prosecutors said the woman reported he shot her accidentally in the shoulder while she was sitting on the bed.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges of aggravated battery to a peace officer causing great bodily harm, two counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer, reckless discharge of a firearm, three counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of cocaine with intent to deliver, possession of cannabis with intent to deliver and possession of a controlled substance.
Kehrli said the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may be sought.
Olivares appeared in First Appearance Court on Wednesday morning and prosecutors filed a petition to detain him pending trial.
A detention hearing is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
