A major fire department structural collapse response was sent after an elderly woman accidentally reversed her car all the way into her neighbor’s house, causing significant damage in Cary Monday afternoon.

The Cary Fire Protection District and Cary Police Department responded around 12:01 p.m. Monday to the 700 block of Fox Trail Terrace in Cary for a report of a vehicle crash with entrapment.

Cary Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said fire crews arrived and located a small sedan that had reversed into a home on the west side of the road.

The driver was not trapped and had already exited the older model red BMW sedan before the fire department’s arrival.

The impact caused significant damage to the vehicle and a support column for the garage, Vucha said.

Firefighters were concerned about the stability of the front portion of the home.

Vucha said an adult resident was inside the home at the time of the collision but was uninjured.

The elderly female driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was evaluated by paramedics at the scene.

She did not require additional medical treatment or transport to the hospital, Vucha said.

Cary Deputy Police Chief Scott Naydenoff said an 87-year-old woman was attempting to back out of her driveway when the accelerator got stuck or remained pressed.

The vehicle drove in the neighbor’s yard across the street, into the driveway and collided with that home’s attached garage, he said.

Additional resources were requested through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) due to the potential for structural collapse.

The MABAS box alarm activation brought the MABAS Division 4 & 5 Technical Rescue Team, including two dozen specialized fire rescue technicians, to the scene.

Vucha said firefighters successfully stabilized and secured the damaged portion of the home so repairs could be completed.

The Cary Building Department responded to evaluate the home.

The home was determined to be habitable by fire and building officials following the stabilization efforts.

“The Cary Fire Protection District thanks the MABAS Division 4 & 5 SRT, Cary Police Department, Cary Building Department, NERCOM and SEECOM dispatchers, and all other agencies and resources that assisted with the incident,” Vucha said.

Naydenoff said that no citations have been issued yet.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Cary Police Department.
