A man was fatally shot in Waukegan Monday evening and several subjects were taken into custody after an hour-long police pursuit through multiple towns in Lake County.
The Waukegan Police Department responded around 6:57 p.m. Monday to the 700 block of Lincoln Avenue in Waukegan for a report of a shooting.
A Waukegan man in his late 20s had been shot multiple times, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
The coroner’s office said that friends or family of the victim had begun driving him to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan before officers arrived at the shooting scene.
He was dropped off at the hospital and pronounced dead from his injuries a short time later, coroner’s officials said.
The coroner’s office was notified just before 9 p.m. and responded to the hospital to take possession of the victim for an autopsy, which is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
A police pursuit began just before 7:30 p.m. Monday in the area of southbound Jackson Street near Grand Avenue in Waukegan.
Police officers reported that the vehicle, a white Nissan Murano, was wanted in connection with the homicide, according to police radio traffic.
An initial report indicated a possible child hostage in the backseat of the car that police were pursuing. The juvenile was dropped off in the middle of the pursuit.
The pursuit continued for an hour and traveled through North Chicago, Waukegan, Park City and Gurnee.
Police officers deployed spike strips multiple times in an attempt to deflate the Nissan’s tires and end the chase, according to police radio traffic.
The chase ranged in speeds but generally did not reach extremely high speeds.
Police were going to terminate the chase due to speeds increasing and presenting a danger to the public around 8:20 p.m. on Green Bay Road in Waukegan.
A Chicago Police Department helicopter was overhead during the pursuit and the Nissan’s slowed down as it traveled onto a residential street, which prompted officers to continue the chase.
Numerous police agencies were involved in the pursuit, including the Illinois State Police. Police radio traffic indicated there was discussion of troopers performing a PIT maneuver to end the chase.
The pursuit ended moments later in the area of 12th Street and Elizabeth Avenue in North Chicago around 8:25 p.m.
Officers reported that two subjects were out of the car and later reported that the subjects were taken into custody, police radio traffic indicated.
The Waukegan Police Department said in a statement that it was involved in a pursuit that crossed multiple jurisdictions but had since concluded.
“Several individuals are in custody. As this is an active investigation, no further information will be provided at this time,” the department said.
“The Waukegan Police Department expresses its appreciation to all the jurisdictions who assisted in ending this pursuit safely,” the department added.
The police department has not released further information on the homicide or police chase as of Tuesday morning.
It is unclear whether any charges are pending against those taken into custody.
