The College of Lake County campus in Grayslake was placed on lockdown Thursday evening and an “emergency alert” was issued after a reported threat led to a police response.
The College of Lake County issued an emergency alert to its students and staff about an “external lockdown threat” at 6:10 p.m. Thursday.
“Dangerous conditions exist nearby that require locking all exterior doors at this campus; Stay inside; Check email,” the alert said, adding that it applied to the Grayslake campus only.
A subsequent email from the college around 6:45 p.m. said an “all clear” was given and normal operations may resume.
College of Lake County Director of Public Relations & Marketing Anne O’Connell said the Grayslake Campus was put into soft lockdown, which means the exterior doors were locked, from 6:10-6:44 p.m. as a “precautionary measure.”
O’Connell said a threat was reported to the College of Lake County Police Department.
“The alleged threat was quickly investigated and determined to be unfounded. The soft lockdown has been lifted,” O’Connell said.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience and compassionate, responsive efforts to support all students through a positive learning and campus environment,” she added.
She did not respond to further questions about what the threat involved or whether it directly involved the campus.
Grayslake Chief of Police Jeff Myhra told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that his department responded to the call but it was determined not to be a threat.
Officers found that it was a female subject suffering from mental health issues, Myhra said.
