Cody J. Romano, 34, of Buffalo Grove.

A landscaper intervened and came to the aid of a woman after police say a suspect was trying to murder the woman during an attack in Buffalo Grove.

The Buffalo Grove Police Department responded around 10:50 a.m. on August 20 to the 200 block of Forest Place in Buffalo Grove.

Officers received a call for a woman being attacked on the street near a residence, police officials said.

Responding officers found a 29-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man outside a single-family home.

It was learned that the woman’s husband, identified as Cody J. Romano, 34, of Buffalo Grove, had attacked her in their residence, police officials said.

Police officials said Romano damaged her cell phone and attempted to suffocate her with a pillow while telling her he was going to kill her.

The victim was able to struggle and break free. She ran outside to the street where she found a lawn care worker.

The worker shielded her as Romano tried to drag the woman back into the residence, police officials said.

A brief struggle ensued and Romano fled the scene. He later returned and was taken into custody by officers.

Romano was not immediately transported to the police department as he was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for a medical episode.

Romano was released from the hospital on Thursday and transported to the Buffalo Grove Police Department.

Investigators reviewed the facts of the case with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The state’s attorney’s office approved charges of attempted murder, a Class X felony; aggravated domestic battery, a Class 2 felony; misdemeanor domestic battery and interfering with the reporting of a domestic battery.

Romano was transported to First Appearance Court in Rolling Meadows on Friday and the state’s attorney’s office filed a petition to detain him pending trial.
